Find Figures Dialog (Microsoft Word)

Use this dialog to insert a figure citation at the cursor.

Note: This topic uses the term "figure" in a generic way to encompass both figures and tables. Figures inserted from all reference types other than Chart or Table are inserted into Word as figures and are numbered as figures. Figures found in the "Chart or Table" reference type are inserted into Word as tables that are numbered separately from figures.

  1. In the "Find" text box, enter text to identify the reference that contains the figure you want to cite. EndNote assumes an "and" between each word, and will search all fields in your records, including the Caption field.

  2. Click Search, and EndNote compares the text to text in your EndNote references and lists each matching reference that contains an figure.

EndNote displays the Author, Year, Title, and Caption field from each matching reference. Drag the vertical bars between the column titles to display more or less of a field. The Caption field should contain a description of the figure. As you click on individual references, the field information found in that reference is displayed in the lower half of the window.

If no references match your text, you need to modify your search text and click Search again.

  3. Identify, highlight, and Insert the appropriate figure.

EndNote places an in-text figure citation at the cursor location. For example:

(Figure 1)

If the figure was found in the "Chart or Table" reference type, the in-text figure citation looks like this:

(Table 1)

The number represents the order of the figure or table in the document.

As you insert figures, EndNote numbers and displays the picture or file, along with its Caption, either directly after the paragraph where it was cited or in a figure list at the end of the Word document (after the bibliography). The placement is determined by the output style.
